Threat Categories provide a useful method to group threats together by shared characteristics so that they can be easily found or compared. If you select Load Common Threats from the Tools menu you will get a default set of Threat Categories and Threats created.
In general, you will create a general list of threats, and then decide which threats apply to each location, activity and resource.
You can create additional categories by right-clicking on the All Threats category. You can assign a threat to a particular category by dragging an dropping it.
A threat can be placed in more than one category by holding down the CTRL key when dragging and dropping it.
Note that some of these sections will be omitted if they are not relevant.

| Parent Threat Category | Any threat category of which this category forms part. |
| Threats in this Category | A list of threats in this category with selected information about them. Click on a threat name for detailed information about that threat. See below for more details. |
| Sub-Categories | A list of any sub-categories defined for this category. |
| Notes | A section intended for additional notes on such topics as how any data was gathered and what assumptions were made. |
Note that the threats in this table are potential threats: they have to be associated with a location, activity or resource to become an actual threat.

| Default Frequency | A default annualized rate of occurrence (ARO) for the threat. This is the default value used when a threat is first associated with a location, activity or resource. |
| Default Impact Duration | Certain threats prevent use of a location, activity or resource for a limited duration without otherwise causing damage. (e.g. a power cut). This is the default value used when a threat is first associated with a location, activity or resource. |
